PORT KLANG: The MCA needs to revamp its membership recruitment process to weed out undesirables in the party, said deputy president Datuk Chan Kong Choy.

The present system for membership applications, he explained, did not require applicants to disclose their background.

“We will look into this aspect and I am going to propose the change during the Presidential Council meeting,” he said after his first working visit to Westport and the Star Cruise Terminal here yesterday.

The council is expected to meet today.

Chan, who is Transport Minister, was commenting on fugitive triad kingpin Ong King Ee, or better known as Jackie Chan, who is an MCA member wanted by the authorities.

“I think wisdom will prevail. Whatever decision made will be in the interest of the party and Barisan Nasional. MCA is not filled with gangsters. This is an isolated case,” he said.

On the country’s ports, Chan pledged to keep them competitive in the face of stiff competition from other facilities in the region.

“Although we have done well to keep our ports competitive there are also many other issues that have to be looked into immediately to make Port Klang attractive to all major liners in the world.

“Things like freight rates, feeder services, incentives and expansion of port facilities,” he, added.
