PORT KLANG: The rapid expansion of Westport and port-related industries at Pulau Indah here, has prompted the Transport Ministry to set up a special committee to recom-mend to the Government how to improve infrastructure and facilities at the place.
Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Azlan Sultan Abu Bakar, who heads the committee, said work such as road widening and better communication and information technology facilities at Pulau Indah were part of the expansion plan.
He said the committee would carry out an in-depth study before submitting its report to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy.
“We must put in place the necessary infrastructure and facilities – especially those concerning roads and communication facilities in Port Klang – in order for us to have some competitive edge over other regional ports,” Tengku Azlan told a press conference after attending a briefing given by Klang Port Authority general manager Datin Paduka O.C. Phang and Klang Multi Terminal Sdn Bhd executive chairman Tan Sri G. Gnanalingam yesterday.
Tengku Azlan said the additional infrastructure and facilities at Pulau Indah would complement the construction of a 1,000ha mega distribution hub by Jebel Ali Free Zone International (JAFZI) of Dubai on the island.
He said between 300 and 400 distribution parks comprising local and international companies were expected to set up their bases at the hub, which would be fully operational in three years’ time.
Tengku Azlan said the mega hub at Pulau Indah would be a major boost for the shipping industry and should help Port Klang improve on its current position as the 11th busiest port in the world.
He urged local port operators to continue to improve their efficacy in cargo handling and clearance. “We must devise ways to hasten the loading and discharging of containers so that the vessels can sail off to their destinations much quicker,” said Tengku Azlan. |
