| THE
partnership between Westports
Malaysia and the Klang District
Schools Sports Council (MSSDK)
has played a big part in Klang
emerging as a powerhouse in
the Selangor Schools Sports
Council (MSSS) athletics championships.
In the recent
championships held at the Petaling
Jaya Stadium in Kelana Jaya,
Klang finished second behind
Hulu Langat.
In the four-day championships,
Klang collected 26 gold, 23
silver and 21 bronze medals
while Hulu Langat had 27 gold,
22 silver and 22 bronze medals.
Klang District
Education officer Mahmud Karim
said they were leading the medal
tally until the last day.
“The impressive outing
was due to the training and
development programme initiated
with the support from Westports
Malaysia.
“We started
the programme in 2005.
“Then,
the trainees were young but
now they have shown tremendous
progress and won medals for
Klang. We also want to show
our appreciation to Westsports
Malaysia for their support.
“The monetary support
from Westports has helped us
unearth many talents from rural
areas. We had initiated talent
identification clinics and motivational
programmes.
“Some
of our athletes have also made
it to the sports schools in
Bukit Jalil and Bandar Penawar.
“We hope they would one
day make an impact at national
and international levels,”
said Mahmud.
Klang's Ong Chin Yong, Mohamed
Syafiq Imran Omar and N. Suganya
were adjudged as the best athletes
in their respective age groups.
Ong, who won
two gold medals, was the Best
Athlete in the boys' Class Three
while Mohamed Syafiq was named
as the Best Athlete in the boys'
Class Four.
Suganya took
home the Best Athlete award
in the girls Class Two.
Mahmud said
they were also proud to have
11 athletes picked to represent
Selangor in the Milo-Malaysian
Schools Sports Council (MSSM)
athletics championships later
this month.
Westports’
executive director Ruben Emir
Gnanalingam said its sponsorship
to the Klang Schools was aimed
at nurturing young talents into
champions.
“Potential
athletes were identified and
provided with training under
capable teachers.
“The results are certainly
encouraging and we hope to see
the athletes excel in national
and international meets,'' said
Ruben.
